It's hard to believe that anybody could run a 400 meter race like Michael Johnson did. It's even harder to believe that this record-breaking performer might have run quite a bit faster!

Johnson, with his odd looking running style, did much to poke holes in some of the current theory of what proper technique should look like.

Even more fascinating, is to take a look at what might have been a world record able to last many decades.

In the accompanying image of the chart to of Johnson's record-breaking performance, it's easy to see how minimal Johnson’s decrements in time were. Reaching his peak speed before ten seconds had elapsed, Johnson was able to maintain a rate of speed above 8 meters per second for almost the entire balance of the race. From the looks of the chart, it's easy to see that Michael had purposely shut down prior to the end.

Is it possible that Michael would have run even faster? There's no doubt in my mind.

What about yours?
